Abstract
Fiber-reinforced composite materials, especially natural fibers, are very profitable alternative materials. Plants that have the potential to be used as fiber reinforcement for composite materials are areca nut fiber and acacia wood powder. This study aims to make a composite board with a mixture of areca nut fiber and wood powder selected in the manufacture of composite particle boards because they have cellulose elements and are easily obtained at a low price with an epoxy resin matrix. In this study, the treatment of variations in the composite mixture of areca nut fiber: 30% acacia wood powder: 50% epoxy, areca nut fiber: 25% acacia wood powder: 50% epoxy and areca nut fiber: 20% acacia wood powder: 50% epoxy. The highest tensile strength test results occurred in specimen 3 with a composite variation of areca nut fiber: 20% acacia wood powder: 50% epoxy resin having a tensile strength value of 17.57 MPa. The highest impact value occurred in specimen 3 of 0.502 Joule/mm2. This is because the presence of areca palm fibers, the greater the mixture and the fibers are able to withstand unidirectional forces, resulting in an increase in tensile strength and impact value. The results of macrostructure observations show broken fibers (fiber break) in specimen 1 and fibers that are pulled out (fiber pull out) in specimen 2 and specimen 3 because the load is distributed to the fibers which causes the fibers to be pulled out more dominantly with a larger fiber composition.
