Abstract

THE EFFECT OF CONCENTRATION ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BACILLUS SP BACTERIA IN REDUCING THE VISCOSITY OF HEAVY OILS AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO MEOR FANI MANISA 203210757 ABSTRACT Heavy oil is formed due to oxidation, heating and the presence of water, which changes its physical and chemical properties, making it thicker and difficult to process. One effective method to overcome this problem is the Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR) method by utilizing microbes which are able to reduce oil viscosity and increase oil production. In this method the bacteria used are Bacillus sp which is a type of thermophilic bacteria and has the ability to break down long carbon chains. This research aims to determine the effect of Bacillus sp bacteria in degrading heavy oil by analyzing bacterial growth, incubation period, temperature, pH, bacterial concentration, viscosity, and FTIR. This research uses an experimental method which was tested on 6 different samples. Sample 1 uses oil, samples 2, 3, 4, 5 are a mixture of oil + Bacillus sp A bacteria with a bacterial concentration of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, sample 6 is a mixture of oil + 10 ml of Bacillus sp B bacteria. This research consisted of the bacterial rejuvenation process, bacterial incubation for 12 days, pH testing, concentration calculations, viscosity testing, and FTIR testing. The temperatures used are 60°C, 70°C, 80°C, 90°C. From this research, the results showed that the viscosity of Bacillus sp A at a concentration of 15% with a viscosity value of 7.94 cp at a temperature of 80°C was more effective than Bacillus sp B of 10 ml with a viscosity value of 10.83 cp at a temperature of 80°C.
