Abstract

THE EFFECT OF SALINITY AND TEMPERATURE ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF BACILLUS SP. BACTERIA IN REDUCING VISCOSITY AS AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD FOR MEOR (MICROBIAL ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY) APRIANTI 203210689 ABSTRACT Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR) is an alternative technology that utilizes microorganisms to enhance crude oil production. One of the commonly used microorganisms in MEOR is the Bacillus sp. bacteria, which is capable of reducing oil viscosity. This study aims to analyze the influence of salinity and temperature on the effectiveness of Bacillus sp. in reducing oil viscosity. An experimental method was employed, testing eight samples with different salinity levels, including 6,000 ppm, 10,000 ppm, 30,000 ppm, 50,000 ppm, 100,000 ppm, 150,000 ppm, 200,000 ppm, and 220,000 ppm. The study involved several processes: rejuvenation of Bacillus sp. bacteria, preparation of Bacillus sp. bacterial suspensions, pH testing before and after incubation using a pH meter, viscosity measurement using a Redwood viscometer, FTIR analysis, and sample incubation in a water bath for three days at temperatures of 60°C, 70°C, 80°C, and 90°C. The results showed that the sample with 150,000 ppm salinity at 80°C exhibited the most effective viscosity reduction, achieving a viscosity of 8.48 cp with a reduction percentage of 38.06%. Thus, this study demonstrates that the appropriate interaction between salinity and temperature can significantly enhance the effectiveness of Bacillus sp. bacteria in degrading heavy oil, thereby improving MEOR efficiency.
