Abstract

Communication is the most essential thing in human relations and especially interpersonal communication in the relationship between caregivers and foster children. Orphanage or institution-based caregivers are the last alternative for caregiver services. The Al-Fajar Bengkalis orphanage was established in 2014, located in Dompas village, Bukit Batu sub-district. Self-concept is a determining factor (determinant) in our communication with others. This study uses a descriptive qualitative research method. The data collection technique uses interviews, observation and documentation and aims to find out how the self-concept of the children at the Al-Fajar orphanage uses interpersonal communication by caregivers. The results of this study are interpersonal communication between caregivers and children at the Al-Fajar orphanage in accordance with Devito's concept, namely the existence of 5 factors in order to establish good interpersonal communication. First, openness means that in communication between caregivers and orphanage children they are open and can be invited to interact and are willing to open up and provide information, then there is empathy within the caregiver to place himself in the position of foster children who are not having parents so that it is easy to understand the character of the orphanage in educating, then a supportive attitude (supportiveness), namely interpersonal communication will run optimally if a person has supportiveness behavior in the orphanage, one of which is support for hobbies owned by the orphanage, then has a positive attitude (positiveness) having positive behavior, namely thinking positively about oneself and others, and finally equality where every orphan is given the same rights and responsibilities without discriminating. in educating orphanage children, caregivers use Islamic methods namely role models, habituation, advice, supervision and punishment of informants using interpersonal communication both verbally and non-verbally.
