Abstract

Scale is a common issue in the oil and gas industry, particularly in piping systems, such as flow lines and production lines. Scale forms from crystallized formation water that accumulates, influenced by certain ionic chemical compounds produced alongside formation water during well production. The formation of scale results in a reduction of pipe diameter and slows down fluid flow, which can increase pressure and temperature within the pipe, leading to pipe damage. Scale can consist of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3), Calcium Sulfate (CaSO4), Barium Sulfate (BaSO4), and other types. Organic inhibitors have become the focus of research as a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative. This study explores the use of gambir leaf extract as an organic inhibitor to reduce scale, with test results showing a high potential for scale reduction, although further research is needed to achieve the optimum reduction value. A comparison with other scale inhibitors such as EDTA 2 Na was also conducted to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing scale. Based on the research results, the tannic acid content in gambir leaf extract was found to be 21.31%. Gambir extract showed a higher potential for scale reduction compared to EDTA 2Na, with a maximum reduction of 53.5% at a soaking time of 40 minutes and a volume of 50 ml. The longer the soaking time and the larger the additive volume, the higher the percentage of scale reduction achieved. For gambir extract, the best reduction occurred at 40 minutes. Gambir extract provided more consistent results that increased with the volume, while EDTA 2Na showed more variable results, peaking at larger volumes.
