Abstract
Corrosion is a chemical phenomenon in metal materials which is basically the reaction of metal into ions on a metal surface which is in direct contact with an environment containing water and oxygen. Galvanized steel is zinc-coated steel (Zn) which contains zinc with a high level of purity (99.7%) plus a certain amount of lead and aluminum which is processed under oxidation-free conditions to produce zinc-coated steel with reliable quality. This research aims to determine the effect of on the corrosion rate of galvanized steel and non-galvanized steel. The corrosion rate measurement method used is the weight loss method. The materials that were the object of this research were galvanized steel and nongalvanized steel and were soaked for 120 hours, 240 hours and 360 hours. The results of research on galvanized steel and non-galvanized steel in the environment show that the environment greatly influences the corrosion rate, it can be seen from the corrosion rate value for non-galvanized steel of 2.49 mmpy and galvanized steel of 0.67 mmpy. For environments without , the corrosion rate value for steel without galvanization is 0.006 mmpy, whereas galvanized steel does not experience corrosion at all. Galvanized steel has better corrosion resistance compared to non-galvanized steel with a soaking time of 360 hours.
