Abstract
Aluminum metal is widely used in various applications but has limitations, namely it is not strong enough and hard enough so it often has problems due to friction. Improvement of these properties can be done by electroplating. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of plating time and anode and cathode spacing in the nickel-chrome electroplating process on aluminum metal. The distance between the electrodes used was 17 cm and 27 cm while the Ni coating time was the same at 25 minutes. Chrome plating time varied at 25 seconds, 30 seconds and 35 seconds. The aluminum metal used is 1100 series with a thickness of 4 mm. Material testing after coating is carried out by measuring thickness, bending testing and hardness testing. The results showed that the highest thickness was obtained at an electrode distance of 17 cm and a coating time of 35 seconds, which was 40 ?m. Meanwhile, the highest bending strength was provided by the material which was coated at an electrode distance of 27 cm with a coating time of 30 seconds, namely 21.354 MPa. The highest hardness was shown by the material which was coated at a distance of 17 cm with a time of 30 seconds, namely 48.275 kg/mm2. Differences in electrode spacing of 17 cm and 27 cm and coating times of 25, 30 and 35 seconds did not result in significant differences in either the bending strength or the hardness of the material. This is because the nickel-chrome layer that is formed is not strong enough as seen from the removal of the layer from the aluminum surface during testing
