Abstract

In the mid of the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone's activities have changed, including the teaching and learning process. All teaching and learning process is done online. During this pandemic, researcher is interested in researching students' interest in studying English through online learning during pandemic. The design of this research is qualitative method which describes how the interest in learning English of the twelfth grade and what factors influence it. The data collection techniques used was questionnaire and interview. The participants for questionnaire consists 32 students and for interview consist 6 students of twelfth grade at MAN 1 Dumai. The result of attention indicator is 65% with high interpretation. And then feelings indicator, with average 51% show moderate interpretation. And then curiosity indicator, with average 57% and with result moderate interpretation. And an indicator of motivation is 49% with moderate interpretation and motives with average 55% with moderate interpretation. The conclusion of this research is that only 55.4% of the twelfth grade students who were studied by researchers had an interest in studying English through online learning during the pandemic. Based on the results of the interviews, there are two factors that influence the interest in learning, namely internal factors which come from within the students themselves and external factors which come from the surrounding environment such as family, friends and teachers.. Suggestions for further researchers, hopefully this research can be a reference for researchers who are interested in the same theme, and so that future researchers can examine more deeply about this theme.
