Abstract

Corrosion is a process of material degradation or loss of a material both in quality and quantity due to a chemical reaction process with its environment. Corrosion occurs due to the reaction of a metal with other compounds in the vicinity that produce unwanted compounds. Corrosion prevention methods using inhibitors can inhibit the corrosion rate, natural inhibitors have advantages including slowing down corrosion and making the life of the material more durable. One factor that affects the corrosion rate is surface roughness. Surface roughness affects the corrosion rate of St 37 steel, the rougher the surface of the material, which is sanded with an 80 grid, the greater the corrosion rate. Conversely, the smoother the surface of the material, sanded with a 1200 grid, the smaller the corrosion rate. The addition of kepok banana peel extract inhibitor can reduce the corrosion rate of St 37 steel, in the material sanded with a grid of 80 the corrosion rate drops from 0.20 mm/y to 0.07 mm/y. The highest inhibition efficiency (corrosion protection) occurred in the rough material, sanded with a grid of 80 which is 29%. This shows that the inhibitor works very well on rough materials.
