Abstract

ABSTRACT The crime of embezzlement is one of the sources of criminal problems in Indonesia and is also contrary to public order. This criminal act often occurs at the Pekanbaru Police and requires special attention, especially for suspects. In practice, the lack of protection for suspects is a problem and is detrimental to the suspect because legal aid is one way of protecting suspects, in accordance with Article 54 of the Criminal Procedure Code. The main problem studied is the implementation of legal assistance in embezzlement cases at the investigation stage and the obstacles that occur in its implementation, because investigation is an important stage in protecting suspects. The type of research used is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. The purpose of descriptive research is to describe the characteristics of facts carefully and determine the frequency of certain events. The reason why many people refuse to use legal aid is because legal aid still feels foreign to suspects and also the level of trust in legal aid is still low, especially for those who receive legal aid with recommendations from investigators. Some investigators still have limited understanding regarding providing legal support to suspects. To overcome these obstacles, increased coordination with Legal Aid Institutions is needed, and training to increase investigators' understanding of providing legal aid, as well as regional government assistance so that public trust in law enforcement increases. This research provides important information regarding the implementation of providing legal support to suspects at the Pekanbaru Police, as well as actions that must be taken to improve the quality of its implementation.
