Abstract
Speaking anxiety is a common experience that many individuals face when they are required to speak in a foreign language in front of an audience. It is characterized by feelings of nervousness, fear, discomfort, a lack of confidence, and worry. It is a common experience among foreign language learners. Based on this phenomenon, numerous studies have been conducted on anxiety in order to discover effective methods for managing and controlling this overwhelming emotion. This research investigated the analysis of students' speaking anxiety. The study was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. The research participants consisted of 34 students from SMAN 1 Tembilahan Hulu, all of whom were in the 10th grade. This study explored the levels of anxiety among students and the most prevalent type of speaking anxiety encountered by learners. During the research, the researcher collected data using the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale designed by Horwitz and a closed-ended questionnaire. The study's findings indicated that the students encountered a sense of unease when participating in class activities. The study revealed that a significant number of students reported feeling varying degrees of anxiety when it came to speaking. In addition, out of all the students, only three (9%) were experiencing high levels of anxiety, forty-one (41%) were experiencing anxious levels of anxiety, while forty-one (41%) were experiencing mildly anxious levels, three (3%) were relatively relaxed. Interestingly, none of the students reported feeling completely relaxed. Based on the interview data, it was found that students' speaking anxiety was primarily influenced by communication apprehension, fear of negative evaluation, and low self-confidence. The various factors that influenced levels and aspects of speaking anxiety included students' beliefs about speaking, their impressions of speaking activities, difficulties in understanding speaking components, a lack of preparation, and the perception of negative evaluation by classmates and lecturers. Research has indicated that students' performance in speaking activities can be influenced by feelings of anxiety. Embracing a growth mindset and approaching academics with dedication and focus can greatly alleviate students' anxiety. It is crucial to cultivate a proactive attitude, engage in thorough preparation, and consistently practice the subject matter before attending class.
