Abstract

This research aimed to identify types and dominant errors in students' descriptive writing, using Surface Strategy Taxonomy for analysis—anerror analysis that highlights altered structures, encompassing omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The research design employed was descriptive quantitative. The populationcomprised second-year students at SMAN 1 Perhentian Raja, and the sample wasselected through simple random sampling from Class XI. The specific classchosen for the study was XI IPA 1, which consisted of 35 students. Data werecollected through a descriptive text writing test covering five topics: people, places, animals, nature, and items. Each student selected one topic for the test After reading and analyzing the descriptive texts of Class XI IPA1 studentsat SMAN 1 Perhentian Raja, it was concluded that four types of errors—omission, addition, misformation, and misordering—were present in their writing. Theseerrors were associated with specific percentages: 34.1%for omission(58instances), 16.5% for addition (28 instances), 44.1% for misformation(75instances), and 5.3% for misordering (9 instances). The dominant error typeamong Class XI students was misformation.
