Abstract

Drilling is a technique used to achieve a desired objective, and drilling mud is an essential component of any drilling operation. Thus, it is very important to consider the rheology of the mud to ensure that it is suitable for the wellbore conditions. Using addictive and circumventing the rheology of dispersion drilling muds are two ways to control mud rheology. In this study, the components of the dispersion system are biopolymer and tapioca starch. Both substances are dissolved in a colloidal solution. A colloid solution is a dispersion system composed of relatively large particles which are dispersed evenly throughout the medium. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of the rheological properties of mud with dispersion systems at temperatures of 28 C, 60 C, 90 C, and 100 C with conventional mud, A1, A2, B1, and B2. The addictive materials used include xanthan gum as biopolymer and tapioca flour. Density, viscosity, plastic viscosity, yield point, gel strength, volume of filtrate and mud cake are the test criteria. Based on the test results in the laboratory, along with the addition of biopolymer and tapioca flour, each sludge contained B1 and B2 mud which met API standard specifications more effective than based mud A1and A2.
