Abstract
The higher education area of the Islamic University of Riau is an area that should have a potentially large volume of pedestrians. However, with diverse land uses, growing trade and services, growing housing, creating an interconnected road network that allows students to move around by vehicle or not using a vehicle. This study aims to assess the walkability index in the higher education area of the Islamic University of Riau in order to see how walkable the environment around the university is for pedestrians. The method used is to describe the existing conditions related to pedestrian support facilities around the university, to describe the characteristics of travelers by looking at the profile and level of interest of travelers on walking, and to calculate the walkability index using the concept of the IPEN project by looking at the perspective urban form. In reviewing the environmental conditions walkable around the university, it is done by describing the suitability between the resulting walkability index value and the characteristics of travelers in the area. The walkability index assessment study shows that the area around Jalan Perum Dokagu has the best or most walkable conditions for pedestrians, this is evidenced by the positive value of the walkability index calculation (3,195) which is influenced by 3 positive partial indices. This is in accordance with the characteristics of existing travelers, namely the intensity of pedestrians who are quite frequent and will increase if the facilities are completed in the future. Based on the analysis of the suitability between the walkability values and the characteristics of travelers on each grid, each grid has a suitability, both on a positive grid and a negative grid.
