Abstract

Stainless steel is an alloy steel containing at least 11.5% chrome by weight. Stainless steel has properties that are not as easily corroded as other steel metals. Type 304 Stainless Steel is a type of Austenitic stainless steel. Stainless steel 304 is at risk of sensitization, that is, precipitation of carbon cromide at grain boundaries due to heating at high temperatures. The application is on construction, while the construction is on a bridge construction, with the occurrence of stress on the construction makes the resistance of the construction material experiences stress making the material quality decreases. This research was conducted to determine the effects of temperature variations of 480 ° C, 650 ° C and 820 ° C. on the phenomenon of stress corrosion cracking on AISI 304 stainless steel in sulfuric acid environment with total immersion method. In this study it was found that the highest hardness value occurred in specimens with 820 oC temperature of 173.18 VHN and the lowest hardness value occurred in specimens with a temperature of 650 oC with a value of 162.72 VHN, and it was also found that specimens with a temperature of 820 oC experienced the highest corrosion rates ie of 1.58 mm / y after 168 hours (7 days ) of immersion and the lowest corrosion rate is at a temperature of 480 ° C with a value of 0.29 mm / y, at that temperature pitting corrosion occurs on all surfaces. The average corrosion rate of specimens without heat treatment and specimens with temperatures of 480 ° C 650 ° C and 820 ° C were 0.62 mm / y, 0.64 mm / y, 0.86 mm / y, and 0.94 mm / y, respectively.
