Abstract

One of the most widely used propeller materials is aluminum alloy. Propeller damage that occurs is dominated by the occurrence of fractures in one or several of its leaves. Damage in the form of a broken propeller is not only caused by the propeller workload, but as a result of accumulation between the propeller work and its corrosive work environment. One way to improve the mechanical properties of aluminum alloys is by means of an aging heat treatment. This study aims to obtain the corrosion rate due to the influence of propeller rotation speed and aging. In this study, the Al alloy material was aged at 170 ° C for 180 minutes. Materials without aging and the results of aging were then tested for corrosion by the dip method at various propeller rotations of 800 rpm, 1000 rpm, 1200, and 1500 rpm with immersion time of 12 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 168 hours. The results showed that the propeller rotation speed affected the corrosion rate of the material. Specimens rotated at 1500 rpm had a corrosion rate of 1.0084 mm / year for materials without aging and 0.9447 mm / year for materials with aging. This corrosion rate is greater than that of specimens rotated at speeds of 800 rpm, 1000 rpm and 1200 rpm. The corrosion rate at 800 rpm is 0.6472 mm / year for materials without aging and 0.5141 mm / year for materials with aging. Aging done on the material can reduce the corrosion rate from 0.6472 mm / year to 0.5141 mm / year at 800 rpm, 0.7913 mm / year to 0.6775 mm / year at 1000 rpm, 0.8805 mm / year to 7438 mm / year at 1200 rpm and 1.0084 mm / year to 0.9447 mm year at 1500 rpm. Micro photo observations show that the type of corrosion that occurs is cavitation corrosion.
