Abstract

Plastic waste is a material that is difficult to decompose by the soil so that its existence is very disturbing to the surrounding environment. One way to use plastic waste is as a substitute for making paving blocks. This research was conducted to reduce the use of sand as a material for making paving blocks with the use of PP (PolyPropylene), the aim is to determine the effect of the compressive strength and water absorption value of paving blocks. The use of PP plastic waste as a partial substitute for sand with a mixture composition of 0%, 10%, 20% and 30% by weight of sand. Making paving blocks using molds measuring 20 x 10 x 6 cm and testing is carried out after 28 days of age using the SNI 03-0691-1996 method regarding concrete bricks (paving blocks). The results showed that the value of the average compressive strength of paving blocks with the use of PP plastic waste as a substitute for some sand decreased with each variation. In a variation of 0% and 10% obtained the compressive strength of 186.47 kg / cm2and 171.13 kg / cm2are both in the quality of B. While the paving block the variation of 20% and 30% obtained the compressive strength of 138, 08 kg / cm2and 93.24 kg / cm2 incoming quality C and D. the absorption of water paving blocks for a variation of 0%, 10% and 20% respectively in the amount of 4.89%, 7.42%, and 9.57% which entered the quality B, C, and D. While the 30% variation was 10.77% which did not enter the quality. This shows that the greater the use of PP plastic waste as a substitute for some sand, the greater the percentage of water absorption from the paving blocks.
