Abstract

Interest has a close relationship with the goal of learning, students needed interest to improve their knowledge in learning English and get the achievement. This study analyzed students’ interest in learning English toward the first grade students in English at SMPN 1 Kandis. This research worked on descriptive qualitative case study. The writer used random sampling technique in choosing the sample of the research. The writer distributed questionnaires to 35 students’ of the first grade, took 20 students’ of the first grade to be interviewed and observation the English teacher and students’ activity during teaching and learning process. The finding showed that the students’ of the first grade had high interest in learning English subject, it can be seen from questionnaire, observation and interview. From questionnaire the data showed that most of students more answers yes than no it mean that the majority of the first grade students has a high interest in English subject. Based on observation teacher and students fulfilled the points of observation and based on teacher and students’ interview most of students said that English class was fun and teacher said that first grade students has good ability in English lesson. It means that the first grade students’ at SMPN 1 Kandis has high interest in learning English.
