Abstract

English spelling has always been described by many language researchers. The data will describe the spelling errors of second Grade students in Junior High School in Pekanbaru. The Objective of this research is to find out spelling error that students made in their writing. This research focus on students spelling error of SMP PGRI Pekanbaru. The students’ types of spelling errors were detected, analysed and then categorised according to Cook’s (1999) classification of errors namely substitution, omission, insertion and transposition. This research is qualitative research. There are 20 students. The writer will give them short story and the student will hear the story. After that, they will write what they hear based on the story. The study revealed that errors of substitution constituted the highest errors. The students replacing one letter into another letter and the minor errors is transposition, the second is omission. Student delete some letter in the word. the third is insertion. Student add an extra letter in the word. Transposition is reversing the letter. In addition, the study indicated that the main causes of the students’ spelling errors were possibly students’ lack of awareness of English spelling rules. The findings suggest that spelling instruction should be emphasised while teaching English and should also be integrated with the skills and subskills of reading, writing, pronunciation and vocabulary in order to develop the students’ spelling accuracy.
