Abstract

This research studied on ability of students in SMAN 1 Kuantan Hilir of XI class. This study was built on difficulty in constructing phrases and the students did not know how to arrange them in an a good order. Moreover, the students felt bored while studying grammar, so that they did not pay attention to the teacher. There so, some possible problems why the students had difficulty in identifying phrase. The objective of the reasearch is to find out how good the students ability in identifying phrase in passage (descriptive reading) at XI grade of SMAN 1 Kuantan Hilir. In this research, the finding is found by identifying phrase in descriptive text. This research method used decriptive study research. The location of this research was at SMAN 1 Kuantan Hilir. The research was conducted on January 2018. The sample of this research were XI.1 and XI.2 . In order to explore the reseach data the writer utilized a reading test as the instrument. The writer used this instrument to know the students’reading ability on identifying phrase especially in descriptive text based on the topic given by the teacher. Both of the classes it appeared students had weak ability in identifying phrases. Though overall result lead to their weakness. however, the data suggest that out of the three phrases, majority students were able to identify noun better than the other two. On the other hand, their ability to figure out verb at the lowest figure.
