Abstract

This study was carried out to analyze students‟ error made by the Second Grade students of SMP N 2 pekanbaru in using regular and irregular verbs in recount text. Specifically, it aimed at obtaining the types of error in identifying regular and irregular verbs in the past form and finding out the most dominant error made by student.The method used in this study is qualitative reserarch. The qualitative reasearch applied in this study to found the errors by Dulay Burt and Kharasen (1927). This study was conducted by following the procedures of error analysis: collecting sample of learner language, classifying of errors, ordering error and reordering errors. The data sources of this study was the Second Grade students of SMP N 2 Pekanbaru which consisted of 32 students. Furthermore, the data was collected by writing test of recount text. Based on the result of analysis, the researcher concluded that the student errors used regular and irregular verb in recount text. There are four categories in error, ommision,addition, misformation and misordering. Then the researcher found three error categories in this research , the highest error made by student is misformation and second, ommision, and the third misordering. This problem influenced by student felt confuse to understand simple past because they did not know meaning and differences between regular verb and irregular verb.
