Abstract
This research was conducted in Batu Tanjung Village and its surroundings, Talawi District, Sawahlunto City, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The objectives of this research are to determine the geological development conditions of the research area, to know the facies distribution and depositional environment. The methods used are geological surface mapping in the field, petrographic approach analysis, and facies analysis. Based on the geological development analysis that was carried out, two geomorphological units were found, namely the Denudational Lowland Hill Geomorphological Unit and the Denudational Steep Hill Geomorphological Unit. The drainage pattern is a dendritic drainage pattern and a parallel drainage pattern. The stratigraphy of the research area obtained from old to young is the Sandstone Unit (SBP) and the Carbonate Sandstone Unit (SBPK). The results of the stereographic analysis show the pitch of net slip and dip of fault values, so that the value of this fault has the name Reverse Left Slip Fault. The results of the analysis in the research area show 7 types of facies related to the lacustrine depositional environment, namely the Very Coarse Sandstone Facies (St), Medium Sandstone Facies (Sp), Medium Sandstone Facies with Thin Coal Intercalations (C), Medium Sandstone Facies with Shale Intercalations (Sh), Medium Sandstone Facies Carbonate (Sl), Alternation of Fine Sandstone and Carbonate Shale Facies (Ss), and Alternation of Fine Carbonate Sandstone and Carbonate Shale Facies (Ss). This facies association is in the Lake Margin Clastic Deposits and Deep Lake Facies environment which reflects the Lacustrine depositional environment. Then the age of the rocks is reinforced by the presence of biological activities such as freshwater fish fossils (Scleropagus) found at station 15 which are estimated to be of Paleocene-Eocene age. The oil and gas potential in the research area is known that the shale in the research area has a Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content of between 0.5% and 5%. This TOC content is classified as quite high and shows the potential of the rock as a hydrocarbon source rock.
