Abstract
Social media Instagram has become an open space for disseminating the views of its users regarding the latent dangers of drug abuse in Indonesia. This study in addition to describing the drug meme symbols that are disseminated on Instagram social media, also explains the meaning behind the emergence of the meme symbols. This study is a qualitative descriptive type using the netnography method. The data collection technique was carried out by reading 108 thousand meme symbols that were disseminated on the Instagram social media platform, using the hashtag search keyword #drugs. The reading process is focused on themes, symbols, and language which are arranged in meme symbols. From these readings, three classifications of meme symbol themes are the most dominant to choose from and are presented as findings in this study. To reveal the meaning behind the drug meme symbol, this study uses thematic analysis by emphasizing the development of a theme or topic through drug meme symbols inductively. The findings in this study show that drug abuse is widely disseminated through three meme symbols, namely; meme symbols of latent dangers of drugs, symbols of law enforcement memes, and symbols of social environment memes. The use of the three meme symbol themes also refers to three critical, evaluative, and ideological meanings that are important findings in this study.
