Abstract

Oil mining activities in Muba, South Sumatra, produce solid and liquid waste (produced water) which has an impact on the environment. Produced water is a by-product of oil and gas processing. This water is different from ordinary water because it contains harmful chemicals and other elements contained in the oil and natural gas (Tiana 2015). Water produced by oil wells contains solid particles and dissolved substances from reservoirs such as Phenol, COD (chemical Oxygen Demand), Oil & Fat, TDS (Total Dissolved Solid), Ammonia and some heavy metals. Proper treatment will make the water produced can be utilized properly. One way to treat formation water is to use physico-chemically activated cocoa shell activated carbon. The manufacture of activated carbon from cocoa pods was carried out in 3 stages of dehydration process, activation of H3PO4 and activation of ZnCl2 with carbonization process carried out at 600°C for 2 hours. Testing activated carbon to determine the adsorption power of the activation process was carried out by testing the level of iodine. The results of the adsorption power test of activated carbon showed that the activated carbon of cocoa pods met the requirements for activated charcoal of the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 06-3730-1995, with an iodine value of 750 mg/g. Activated carbon H3PO4 is activated carbon with the best iodine value compared to activation using ZnCl2, so it is more effective as an absorbent medium. The formation water that has been treated using activated carbon activated H3PO4 with a combination of zeolite and walnutshell, produces water that is clearer and odorless compared to activated carbon using ZnCl2 activation with a combination of zeolite and walnutshell. This shows that the higher the iodine number, the higher the activated carbon to absorb solutes. So activated carbon activated H3PO4 with a combination of zeolite and walnutshell can reduce the content of solid particles and solutes in the produced water. than it is suitable as the best formation water filtration media to be used as a water treatment plan media for produced water in field X.
