Abstract
Composite is a material that is formed from two or more separate materials to produce different mechanical properties and characteristics from the constituent materials. At times the combination of resin hardner is betel nut fiber and fiberglass fiber as reinforcement. The use of betel nut is because it is one of the strongest fibers and Riau itself is the largest betel nut producer, precisely in the downstream Indragiri area, the use of fiberglass fiber is also used because it is a superior fiber at this time. Composites from natural and synthetic fibers also need to be tested to find out how strong the mechanical strength of this composition is, especially impact and bending strength. The composition of this fiber and resin with variations of 60% resin and 40% fiber, while 40% fiber is divided into 25% fiberglasss + 15% areca fiber, 30% fiberglass + 10% areca fiber, 35% fiberglass and 5% areca fiber. With a view to getting the best composition. Specimen making and testing procedures refer to ASTM D790 for bending and ASTM D6110-02 for impact. The results of the impact and bending tests show that the less use of strength fiber produced, the better, the highest strength at impact is with a combination of 35% fiberglass + 5% areca fiber with a strength of 11.01 j/mm2, while the bending is also the same, namely the composition of 35 % fiberglass + 5% areca fiber with a strength of 93.29 N/mm2. It can be concluded that the more use of fiberglass, the stronger the mechanical strength of the composite.
