Abstract

Composite is a combination of a material consisting of more than two materials, and combined to form a material that has different properties from the original material. With the abundance of sugarcane plants in Indonesia, this can certainly be utilized, especially in the sugar cane husk which is often thrown away and causes waste. So that this skin can be used for the manufacture of composites, by combining sugarcane skin fibers with polyester resin. To determine the mechanical properties, it is necessary to test the composite on the bending strength and impact toughness. With a volume variation of 80% resin + 20% fiber, 70% resin + 30% fiber and 60% resin + 40% fiber. With the hope to get the right composition, and improve the usability of sugarcane husk fiber, to become a new material. The steps taken are by selecting sugarcane skin fiber, and mixing it with polyester resin. Specimen manufacture and test procedures refer to ASTM D790 for bending testing and ASTM D6100 for impack testing. The results of the impack and bending tests showed that the strength of the largest bending test was 52.38 N/mm2, for the fraction of 60% resin + 40% fiber. While the lowest strength for bending testing is 37.89 N/mm2, for volume fraction 80% resin + 20% fiber. And the biggest result of the impack test was 0.354 J for the 60% resin + 40% fiber fraction, while the lowest strength was 0.300 J for the 80% resin + 20% fiber fraction. Which means that the higher the fiber composition, the better the toughness and strength of the specimen.
