Abstract

The increasing in population as well as the activities resulted in pressure on the space marked by the phenomenon of land cover changes, this will have an impact on the development of the city. The purpose of this research is to analyze the morphological development of Pekanbaru City in 1996-2016. In this study the city morphology is based on aspects of land cover change, building patterns, and road network patterns. This riset uses quantitative and qualitative descriptive analysis with remote sensing interpretation techniques of landsat imagery in 1996, 2006, and 2016 which are equipped with field tests conducted with Stratified Random Sampling. Analysis of interpretation was conducted to determine the land cover changes used as one to determine the development of the city morphology. The data result shows that a level of interpretation accuracy of land cover in 1996 is 92,5%, in 2006 is 90% and in 2016 is 87,5% wich shows that the result is greator than the minimum 85% level of accuracy. In other words, it can be accepted to the process of the assessment of the land settlement suitability level. Land cover experienced a significant change from a non-built land to built-up land in 1996-2016 reaching the total of 102 km2. The buiding pattern seen in Pekanbaru City in 1996 more focus towards the city center then in 2006-2016 the pattern tended to spread. The road network pattern seen in Pekanbaru City is predominantly grid patterned because the general topography of Pekanbaru City is relatively flat. The expression of the spatial morphology of the city form in Pekanbaru belongs to the form of a divided city, where Pekanbaru City is geographically separated by the Siak River. Then the morphological developments seen in the past 20 years, which is between 1996 to 2016 were shaped unpatterned and their development tend to be more focus towards the southwest of Pekanbaru City.
