Abstract
Reading serves as an important tool in every field of professional service and one of the indispensable channel around the world to recognize, interpret, and perceive written or printed material. Without reading, it will be difficult for students to further the students’s advanced education in higher level fields. Hence, the students that can comprehend what they read in Recount Text mean that they have reading comprehension correctly. Reading comprehension is not simple process, because of English is a second or foreign language for the students.The students still find the difficulties in comprehending recount text. The objective of this research was to find out the students’difficulties especially in comprehending recount text. Five problems which faced by students including vocabulary, working memory, generic structure, lack of background knowledge and type of text. This research used qualitative research. The data was taken from at SMP Negeri 4 Pekanbaru. The researcher took 32 respondents from IX-6 as samples. In this research, the researcher used questionnaire and interview as research instruments. The result of the study showed that the students’difficulties in reading comprehension of recount text were (32.50%), working memory (28.13%), generic structure (45.32%), lack of background knowledge (84.38%), and type of text (43.75%). Thus, the highest percentage was lack of background knowledge. In different way, working memory was the lowest percentage in this research.
