Abstract

CLL is a method of teaching English that developed by Charles A. Curran where the learner treated as the client and teacher as the counselor like psychologist with the client. The focus of this method to make student comfort to express their problem during learning English, especially in speaking skill and try to find the solution and also the teacher plays role as translator to help students change the L1 into L2. The purpose of this research to find out wether there is significant effect of CLL towards students’ speaking skill of the second year students at SMAN 1 Pekanbaru. This research used experimental research design. They were experimental class and contol class. The sampe of this research consists of 34 students for experimental class and 33 students for control class at the second grade students. The instrument of this research was oral test of conjunction for telling cause and effect also explanation text for pre-test and post-test. In this research, the test scoring based on 5 indicators; pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The effect of the method can be seen by comparing pre-test and post-test result in both class. The researcher analyzed the data using SPSS version 24 and did hypothesis test. The researcher found the result experiment class score for the pre-test was 71,28 while the post-test 88,11 which increased about 16,83. In the control class pre-test score was 76,58 which increased about 9,86 in the post-test (86,44). It means there is significant increase of the students speaking skill from pre-test to post-test, especially in experimental class. In conclusion, the Community Language Learning (CLL) method can be used to teach speaking skill in the second grade students at SMAN 1 Pekanbaru.
