Abstract

Pragmalinguistic failure is the consequence of the diversity of language. That particular failure will appear because of the language in the particular area has its own lexical system. Therefore, this study is aimed to analyze what is the dominant pragmalinguistic failure in the fourth semester students’ essay writing. In conducting this study, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative. The population was the fourth-semester students that is about 161 students. The researcher used random cluster sampling to take the samples, means the researcher took the representative sample of 27 students in one class. The technique used to collect the data is a documentation which is collecting the data through classroom documentation. After doing the research, the researcher concluded there are 7 kinds of pragmalinguistic failure that found in students’ argumentative essay. The failure are verbose appositions, combination of two subordinate clauses, misunderstandings of words, native (Indonesian) construction of sentences, run-on sentences, independent subordinate clauses, the omission of relative pronouns. The dominant pragmalinguistic failure found was the Indonesian construction sentence with the total 41 failures from 22 samples that researcher found. The students mostly still depend a lot on the dictionary while writing some particular English text. The causes of Indonesian construction sentence because of those students did not consider about the meaning of that particular word they want to write as well as the role of that word.
