Abstract

Lexical cohesion is a linguistic device which helps to create unity of text and discourse. The objective of this research is to find out the types of lexical relations in “Pathway to English” textbook. Lexical relations looked simple but they are very important. Five types of lexical relations were found in “Pathway to English” textbook. They were repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy and collocation Moreover, lexical relations could be used in textbook to make the texts more interesting for the students. This research used qualitative method. The source of data were the words and sentences of 7 texts in “Pathway to English” textbook. The researcher collected the data by reading each texts in “Pathway to English” textbook and classified the word to each types of lexical relations. After analyzing the data, the researcher concluded that in this research there were 5 types of lexical relations found in “Pathway to English” textbook. They were repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy and collocation. The total of lexical relations found in “Pathway to English” textbook are 111 samples. The classifications are 49 samples of repetition, 5 samples of synonymy, 3 samples of antonymy, 13 samples of hyponymy, and 37 samples of collocation. Therefore, the researcher concluded that collocation is the most dominant of lexical relations used in “Pathway to English” textbook.
