Abstract

Vocabulary is foundation or basic of language, because it is one of the indicators that can influence students' ability in mastering the language. In addition, vocabulary knowledge is one component that links the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing all together. Hence, this research was conducted to find out the vocabulary knowledge of the third grade students and to find out the level of vocabulary knowledge of the third grade students at SMK KANSAI Pekanbaru in 2017/2018 academic year. This research worked on descriptive quantitative research method by involving 38 students from class XII MO (Machine Automotive) 2. Those students were selected through Cluster Random Sampling. Multiple choice tests were used to find out the vocabulary knowledge of the students. The result of this research showed that most of the third grade students were in very good level of vocabulary knowledge in antonyms and synonyms. It was found based on some indicators of antonym and synonyms including verbs, and adjectives. However, the result showed that there were 4 students got “poor level”, 8 students got “fair level”, 8 students got “good level”, 11 students got “very good level”, and 4 students got “Excellent”. In conclusion, the majority level of students’ vocabulary knowledge in antonyms and synonyms was in very good level. It means that the students do not have significant problem in antonym and synonym vocabularies.
