Abstract

Language has a crucial role in a human life's communication since it functions as a media tool to make interaction. One way to establish a meaningful conversation in society is by applying politeness. The significances of politeness strategies in communication do not only occur in the real society. Those can also be found in the forms of literary works such as novels, movie and dramas. They are as the imitation and portrayal of social life. The researcher chose to analyze a character to get many kinds of positive politeness and its purpose. The researcher applied the qualitative research and used descriptive methods in this study because all data are in the form of words. Meanwhile, the type of the research is content analysis because it intended to analyze the content of the data which are in the form of movie script to find the politeness strategies. When analyze the data, the researcher used the theory of Brown and Levinson about politeness strategies. The writer analyzed the utterances of Buster Moon as the main character taken from the script of Sing film. The study reveals that Buster performs all kinds of positive politeness strategies in conversation. Offer/Promise strategy is mostly used in Buster's utterance. It appeared 30 times in Buster's utterances. The next is give Sympathy to Hearer strategy; it was used 25 times by Buster. The third is Assert/Presuppose speaker's knowledge of and concern for hearer's intention; it appeared 13 times in Buster's utterance. Notice, attend to hearer (his or her wants, interest, needs and goods) appeared times in Buster's utterance, Exaggerate (interest, approval, sympathy with the hearer) appeared 9 times in Buster's utterance, Intensify interest to the hearer in the speaker's contribution appeared 9 times in Buster's utterance. Use in groups identity markers appeared 7 times in Buster's utterance, Seek agreement appeared 8 times in Buster's utterance, Avoid disagreement appeared 3 times in Buster's utterance, Presuppose/Raise/assert common ground appeared 1 times in Buster's utterance, Joke appeared 4 times in Buster's utterance, Be optimistic appeared 7 times in Buster's utterance, Give or ask for reason appeared 6 times in Buster's utterance, Assume of assert reciprocity appeared 1 times in Buster's utterance. Buster mostly used positive politeness strategy in terms of offer strategy to show cooperation and also to maintain his close relationship with the other character.
