Abstract

The data will describe the reading habits of Second Grade students Junior High Schools in Pekanbaru. The objective of this research is to find out how are students’ reading habits or Junior High School Pekanbaru. This research focuses on how are students’ reading habits of SMP Negeri 4 Pekanbaru and SMP Negeri 5 Pekanbaru. This research design of this study was a case study. There are four classes that were being the sample and it consisted of 118 students which were 61 students from SMP Negeri 4 Pekanbaru and 57 students from SMP Negeri 5 Pekanbaru. The instrument of this research was open questionnaire of reading habits indicators. In this research, reading habits indicators consist of five components; attitude toward reading, reading frequency, type of books read, time spent on reading, and motivation in reading. Students reading habits can be seen by the indicators of reading habits by finding out from the students’ answer on the questionnaire. The researcher analyzed the data and find out that there were 80 students of 118 students have the high amount the books read, 78 students have the high frequency of reading activity, 70 students were motivated by their family and read the book as their family members, and 69 students were motivated by their teacher to doing the reading activity. Furthermore, 65 students spent the time to read in spare time, 64 students were feeling anxious and difficult in reading activity, 62 students spent their time on academic to read their book, as their duty as students.
