Abstract
Speaking is a process like take and give information that people do in a communication, it can be used verbal or nonverbal symbols in every context. Verbal symbol involves producing or uttering words through talking. This research is exploring intonation in student speaking. Intonation is the way how people using tunes in speaking. This research focuses on falling intonation, raising intonation, fall-raise intonation, raise-fall intonation. The objectives of this research is to give worthy contribution and will be useful for not only English students but also the readers to tell the importance of intonation in speaking or oral communication. The methodology of this research was qualitative research. The source of the data in this research was from the recording which was conducted by the researcher. The data were in the conversation of students performers, and there were five conversation as the source of this research. The instrument of this research was the documentation and the researcher who tought the recording. The researcher read and analyzed the dialogue using Alan Cruttenden’s theory. The research describes there were mother language gave affect when the student English speaking in eight grade in SMPN 1 Siak Hulu. Most of students as sample were bataknese that was why, the intonation when they were speaking English always high at the end of the sentence. Moreover, based on the data analysis, the researcher got the result that there are 58 items the totals of mistake in intonation, for falling intonation found 38 items, then rising intonation found 9 items, fall-rise found 2 items, and rise-fall found 3 items. The researcher has counted all the data using recording manually and accurately.
