Abstract
Ellipsis (instead of) leaving out a word or words from the grammatical structure of a sentence when the meaning can be understood without it or them, In other words, in sentences, a word, or several words are omitted but their sense is clearly understood. Hence, this research was conducted to find out the mastery of ellipsis by the third year students of the English Study Program of FKIP-UIR and to find out which ellipsis is difficult or easy for the students, This research worked on descriptive research method by involving 35 students from D class. Those students were selected through Cluster Random Sampling. The result of this research showed that most of the students were in poor level. It was found based on some indicators of ellipsis. However, the result showed that there were 11 students got “poor level”, 9 students got “fair level”, 9 students got “good level”, 5 students got “very good level”, and 2 students got “Excellent”. In conclusion, the majority level of students’ score and level of mastery was in poor level, It means that some of the students did not answer the question correctly because the students misunderstood about Ellipsis used. Furthermore, the results of the percentage of students in answered each type of ellipsis showed that nominal ellipsis (deictic, numeral, epithet) are difficult for the students, while verbal ellipsis (lexical, operator) and clausal ellipsis (propositional, modal) are easy. In conclusion, most of the students have some problems to answer the question of nominal ellipsis that the students got difficulties to understand the meaning of words in the question.
