Abstract

Politeness is the ability of the participants in a social interaction to engage in interaction in an atmosphere of relative harmony. Politeness is a system of interpersonal relation designed to facilitate interaction by minimizing the potential of conflict and confrontation. There are 6 maxim proposed by leech: Tact, Generosity, Approbation, Modesty, Sympathy and agreement. In conducting this study, the researcher used a descriptive qualitative. Data of this research comes from the movie “The perks of being a wallflower” and the movie script. This research used qualitative approach. Instrument of the data is in form of documentation. To collect the data, researcher download the script of the movie read the movie script and found the sentence that contains politeness maxim. After collecting the data, the researcher is able to answer research question number one, there are 7 Tact maxim, 8 Generosity maxim, 10 Approbation maxim, 2 Modesty maxim, 5 Sympathy maxim and 2 agreement maxim conveyed by the character in the movie. Researcher found that Approbation maxim is the most dominant maxim because most of the Character in the movie often praises the other Character personality, achievement, talent etc. for research question number two, Researcher explain the context of situation of each maxim found. Context of situation is consist of 3 categories: 1. Field: What is being discussed in the scene, 2. Tenor: Who is involved in the scene, 3. Mode: How the information is being delivered.
