Abstract

Key words: syntax, phrases, noun phrases, components, functions, newspaper Syntax is a study about grammar. In grammar, there is about phrases that divided into five types. One of them is noun phrase, which is defined as a group of words that noun or pronoun as head word. In fact, head, determiner, pre-head modifier, and post-head modifier are components of noun phrases. Each noun phrase has a function in a sentence including subjects, objects, complements, adverbial, or modifies an adjective or adverb. The objectives of this research were to find out noun phrases that functioned as subjects and objects in The Jakarta Post’s newspaper. Then, identify components of them. This research used descriptive research. The data was taken from sport news edition October 18, 2017 and October 25, 2017. In analyzing the data, the researcher used the theory of Creswell (2014:247); organizing and preparing, reading, coding, generating, representing, and making an interpretation of the findings. The results of the study showed that highest frequency was noun phrases as subjects. Instead, there were four types of subjects found including agent, patient, instrument, and recipient. The type of subjects like patient was frequently used. Agent and instrument were least. Then, recipient was rarely. Next, there were direct objects. Furthermore, there were seven forms of components of noun phrases found. They were head + determiner, head + determiner + pre-head modifier, head + determiner + post-head modifier, head + determiner + pre-head modifier + post-head modifier, head + pre-head modifier, head + pre-head modifier + post-head modifier, and head + post-head modifier.
