Abstract

Smartphones are smartphones with computer-powered capabilities supported by a sophisticated operating system. Journalists Riauonline use smartphone as a communication tool to support the performance of journalists in the work. Smartphones are very helpful for journalists in looking for news and send the news anywhere and anytime. This study aims to determine the extent of the role of smartphones in supporting the performance of journalists Riauoline, and the factors that affect the use of smartphones. According to Utomo (2012) smartphones have basic features that are: operating system, hardware, messaging, access internet / web, application, qwerty keyboard, and office. The researcher used qualitative descriptive method with qualitative approach, to obtain the research data by interviewing 5 informants, 4 Riauonline journalists and 1 chief editor of Riauonline. Viewed from the results of interviews this research shows the smartphone is very instrumental in supporting the performance of journalists Riauonline in data processing, access the internet, looking for entertainment, and store data in the form of documents. Usefulness of these smartphones help facilitate Riauonline journalists in terms of providing information to the editor to be published on online media as the news obtained. The many features contained in the smartphone into a special attraction for journalists Riauonline to make the means or tools supporting the work as journalism.
