Abstract

Recount texts usually tell about a persons’ experiences in the past, so to tell a recount text, it must use simple past tense. The use of simple past tenses causes most students’ to feel confused when constructing the correct sentences. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of using free writing techniques on students' abilities to writing recount text at SMPN 6 Siak Hulu. In this study, researchers used 2 classes as a sample consisting of an experimental class and a control class. The sample of this research was students of class VIII-1 and VIII-2 of SMPN 6 Siak Hulu where each class consisted of 24 students. The instrument used is the Pre-test and Post-test. Data were analyzed by using the Independent Sample t Test (Independent t Test) using the SPSS 25.00 program. The results of this study indicate that there is a significant difference between the experimental class and the control class. The average score of the experimental class was 83.54 which was higher than the control class score of 71.83. From the results of program statistical calculations, the researcher found that the sig 2 tailed value was 0.000 < 0.05, so it could be concluded that there was a significant effect of using free writing techniques on students' ability to write recount texts at SMPN 6 Siak Hulu.
