Abstract

THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL SUPPORT ON SUICIDE IDEAS IN PRIVATE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN PEKANBARU CITY Deana Sallya Miranti 208110013 FACULTY OF PSYCHOLOGY RIAU ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY ABSTRACT Problems related to the emergence of suicidal ideation can be studied by looking at the influence of internal individual variables, such as lack of social support on the development of suicidal ideation. Social support is a form of acceptance by an individual or group of people where a person feels loved, cared for, appreciated and helped. Students were the main reason for selecting the sample. This is related to a phenomenon that often occurs in 2023, namely there are several cases of suicide deaths among students or early adults with an age range of 18-25 years. The aim of this research is to determine the influence of social support on suicidal ideation among private university students in Pekanbaru City. The sample in this study was 395 University X students, which were determined using cluster sampling techniques. The data collection method in this research is using the suicidal ideation scale consisting of 23 items proposed by Reynolds (1991) and adapted by Khairunnisa (2019), and the Social Support scale proposed by Cohen, Underwood and Gothlieb (2000) and adapted by Khairunnisa (2019). The results of statistical analysis using the Pearson Product Moment correlation test show that there is a significant positive influence between Social Support on Suicide Ideas among Private University Students in Pekanbaru City, with an r value of 0.144 and a sig value of 0.002. This means that the higher the social support received, the lower the thoughts of suicide among students.
