Abstract
Thesis. Students' Ability to Write News Texts for Class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Tanah Putih for the 2022/2023 Academic Year This research was motivated by the fact that some students did not understand writing news texts based on the 5W+1H elements and news presentation patterns and was proven from initial observations and the phenomena that occurred. This research aims to describe, analyze and interpret data regarding writing news texts based on news elements and news presentation patterns for class VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Tanah Putih. The research method used is a descriptive method with a quantitative approach. The data collection techniques required are observation techniques and test techniques. The data analysis technique in this research is (1) Carefully checking and examining the results of student answer sheets. (2) The results of student answers will be assessed based on the existing assessment rubric. (3) Determine students' final grades using assessment guidelines according to Nurgiyantoro (2010:437). (4) These values are then compiled to determine the average value of students' abilities using the formula proposed by Sudijono (2015: 80). (5) To classify the average results of students' ability to write news texts using assessment guidelines. Based on data analysis carried out, the ability of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Tanah Putih for the 2022/2023 academic year in writing news texts based on news elements was 81.6 (good criteria), thus the hypothesis was rejected. The ability of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Tanah Putih for the 2022/2023 academic year in writing news texts based on news presentation patterns was 67.68 (sufficient criteria), thus the hypothesis was accepted.
