Abstract

This article aims to describe items based on the types of cohesion that are found in reading comprehension chapters of English Textbook Based on 2013 Curriculum for Grade IX Published by KEMENDIKBUD RI. The Research uses descriptive qualitative methods which are considered the right approach as a type of research. The researcher got source of data from English Textbook for grade IX entitled “Think Globally Act Locally” published by KEMENDIKBUD RI. The main instrument is the researcher itself because the source of the data from the texts of a textbook and analyzed the data by herself. Documentation is the data collection technique of this research because the data was collected from the reading text in each chapter of the book. The researcher analyzed cohesion from five sample texts in each reading comprehension chapters which already represent all of the text in the textbook. After read and analyzed the cohesion from the samples, it can be concluded as follows. The total cohesion that occurs, there were found of 118 data of Lexical Cohesion and 178 data of Grammatical Cohesion. The researcher found the Lexical Cohesion in the text were; 74 Repetitions, 10 synonyms, 4 superordinate, and 30 collocations, and Grammatical Cohesion were; 124 references, 2 substitutions, 2 ellipsis, and 50 conjunctions. Regarding the result of finding, it seems that most of cohesion is (Lexical and Grammatical) occur in the text 2 of reading comprehension chapter page 140-141 in the Textbook based on 2013 curriculum for grade IX published by KEMENDIKBUD RI.
