Abstract

Adolescents are in a period of rapid physical development, so this period is a period that is very focused on physical changes and will tend to give physical assessments. This physical assessment is called body image. Body image can be known by self-evaluation, one of which is by conducting online social comparisons through social media, one of which is Instagram social media. This study aims to determine the relationship between social comparisons of Instagram users with body image in adolescents. The data collection method in this study used the UDACS scale (The Upward and Downward Appearance Comparison Scale) consisting of 13 items modified by Setiawati (2020) according to Festinger's theory (1954), and a body image scale consisting of 50 items proposed by Cash. and Pruzinsky (2002), compiled from the results modified by Fizlina (2021). The sample in this study amounted to 398 adolescents, which were obtained through a non-probability sampling method, namely purposive sampling. The data analysis method used in this study is the Spearman Rho method. The results of statistical analysis show that there is a relationship between social comparisons of Instagram users and body image in adolescents.
