Abstract

Speech code in intercultural communication is a system of conventions that regulates and combines signs with one another in the form of words or pictures, but also behaviors and concepts. Speech code adaptation emphasizes the ability of Pattani foreign student to adjust the atmosphere through language style when together or in a foreign environment. Speech code aims to be a specific set of understandings within a culture of what constitutes communication, a clear description of the forms of communication in a culture, how all of these forms can be understood, and how they are handled. This research method uses qualitative research with descriptive analysis presentation. Data was collected through interviews, observation and documentation. The subjects of this study consisted of 6 people who were divided into 4 main informants and 2 additional informants who were selected by purposive sampling. For data analysis, the researcher applied Miles and Huberman's interactive analysis technique. The results of this study indicate the adaptation of speech codes in general, namely Pattani foreign students are able to adapt well even though there are shortcomings in several aspects. Regarding the substance of the proposition conveyed by Gerry Philipsen, it can be concluded that there is no typical speech code for Pattani foreign students which may be because they already understand more or less the language and culture of the local community. Regarding ways of adaptation, assimilation, separation, integration and marginalization, each individual has their own style and way of adaptation, so that at some points it is uniform and at other points it is different. In this case, only marginalization adaptation is not found in foreign students.
