Abstract
This study is motivated by the low cognitive achievement of students in learning Islamic Studies at SMPN 1 Pelalawan. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of discussion method on students’ cognitive achievements in learning Islamic Studies at SMP 1 Pelalawan. This is a quantitative study with a correlational approach. The sample size of the study is 85 respondents. The data collection techniques of the study are questionnaires and documentation and the data analysis is conducted through normality tests and hypothesis testing consisting of T-test, one way ANOVA and linear regression. The results of the study show that the students’ cognitive achievements in learning Islamic Studies still gets low scores, even though the teacher has provided materials according to the lesson. In other cases, students still cannot understand lessons well. There are some students who are less active even though the teacher has provided opportunities for them. Based on the data analysis, it is known that there is an effect of the discussion method on the students’ cognitive achievements in learning Islamic Studies at SMPN 1 Pelalawan. It is found that the effect of the discussion method on students’ cognitive learning achievement at SMPN 1 Pelalawan with a significance value of 0.000. The magnitude of the effect is moderate (0.466% or 46.6%). In conclusion, the discussion method has an effect on the students’ cognitive achievements in learning Islamic Studies at SMPN 1 Pelalawan.
