Abstract

The marriage of the Bugis people is very well known as a marriage that costs a lot of money and has even become a phenomenon and a byword in today's society, especially in the Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency. Because in the marriage of the Bugis people, it is known that there is a very high demand for panai (honest money) because it has become a customary provision for the Bugis people in Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency. Based on the background of the problem, the formulation of the problem raised by the author is, How are the Provisions for Payment of Panai Money in Bugis Traditional Marriages in Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, and What are the Consequences of Customary Law Against Violation of Panai Money Agreements in Bugis Traditional Marriages in the District Keritang Indragiri Hilir Regency. This study uses an empirical sociological method, in which the author goes directly to the field to produce data by directly interviewing the respondents, and the nature of this research is analytical descriptive. This research was conducted in the Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency. From this study, it can be seen that the provisions for payment of panai in traditional Bugis marriages are determined based on the level of social strata of the Bugis ethnic community, such as, women's families including rich people, in terms of education, occupation, having a noble title (custom) and others, the higher the social strata level of the woman's family, the higher the demand for panai money, so that there is often a rejection of applications from the woman's family because the man's family does not accept and there is no agreement between the two families. Payment of panai money can be made after the wedding reception and before the wedding reception, it all depends on the agreement of the two families, but if the male family violates the previous payment of panai, there will be consequences of customary law which has become the rule of tribal society Bugis in Keritang District, Indragiri Hilir Regency.
