Abstract

This research used descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques are done by interview and documentation. The data from this research were obtained from several data sources to answer the research question that is primary and secondary data. This research uses theoretical model S-O-R Message (stimulus S), Communicant (Organism, O), and Effect (Response, R) as a basis for writing this thesis. There are 10 informants in this research who are passive smokers. The results of this research explain how passive smokers respond to the visual dangers of smoking on cigarette packaging. The message in the visual of cigarette can be understood by the informant that cigarette smoke is dangerous and can cause health problems. On the communicant, the first impression of seeing that visual is a feeling of being disturbed. Those responses are divided into three: Cognitive response, the presence of the visual adds knowledge and information for passive smokers. Affective response, visual inclusion on cigarette packs is considered ineffective in reducing the number of active smokers in Indonesia. While the conative response is the real action taken by passive smokers after seeing the visual appearance of the danger on the cigarette packaging.
