Abstract

Reading comprehension is the ability, it is not only to understanding the text but also to comprehend the meaning of the text. Short functional text is is a short text that has particular meaning and purpose, and can be used in our daily life. It may be in the form of letter, invitation card, announcement, advertisement, brochure, greeting cards, short message, shopping list, notice, announcement, etc. The design of this research was a quantitive descriptive. This research only analysed and described the ability in comprehension short functional text at the second year of SMAN 4 Pekanbaru. Descriptive method was applied to this research. The source of the data was the students' answer the question, the form of the test in reading test (multiple choices). In this research, the researcher took about 20% of the population that was about 41 students. The data was analyzed by calculating the students' score individually and finding out the mean score. The students' score classified into five level mastery; they were: excellent, good, average, poor, and very poor. The data was presented by using graphic. Based on the result finding of this research, the students' reading comprehension on short functional text of the second year students at SMAN 4 Pekanbaru was in good level. Meanwhile, the mean score of the whole students' score was 73.17
