Abstract

National oil production results continue to decline from year to year for the next 9 years due to the low discovery of new reserves so that to maintain the rate of oil lifting in the short term, we can rely on the Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) method with chemical injection of surfactant-polymer. This study aims to determine the density, viscosity and compatibility of surfactant methyl ester sulfonate (MES) and polymer xanthan gum (XG) with various surfactant, polymer and salinity concentrations with determine the concentration of polymeric surfactants from MES and XG that can work optimally in improvement of recovery factor (RF) by using spontaneous imbibition method. The research was carried out at the Petroleum Engineering Reservoir Laboratory, Islamic University of Riau. The research consisted of 3 stages, namely the pre-research stage, the research implementation stage and the post-research stage. Spontaneous imbibition method was used to determine the effect of surfactant-polymer performance on oil recovery through of MES and XG concentrations. The test of MES surfactant and XG polymer consisted of concentration variations, namely 0,1%, 0,3%, 0,5% with polymer concentrations of 1000, 1500, and 2000 ppm at salinity of 5000, 15.000, 30.000 ppm as independent variables and RF as fixed variables. Initial testing on a laboratory scale consists of density, viscosity and compatibility tests. The results showed that the highest density and viscosity values were at a concentration of 0,5% MES and 2000 ppm XG at a salinity of 30.000 ppm where the density and viscosity increased along with the addition of concentration and salinity and based on the results of the compatibility test all concentrations of MES and XG were compatible with formation water. The optimum recovery factor produced from surfactant methyl ester sulfonate and xanthan gum polymer using the spontaneous imbibition method is 32,72% at 0,5% MES concentration and 2000 ppm XG with 15.000 ppm salinity.
